Default 255/45 on stock 18x8 wheels? Besides 1.3% speedo/gearing error good idea or bad idea?

I have an affliction where I have to research everything to death before making a decision and right now it's tires.

One of the tires I'm considering only comes in 255/45. Anybody else running that size on the stock wheel or an 18x8 wheel? I keep getting told that I should use 18x8.5 if I want to use 255 tires.

Thoughts?

Default I'm running 255/45/18 and love 'em.

Gives the A8 a meaner look from the rear with the extra 10mm of width. I have 8" wide wheels and they fit fine, but 8.5" would be better. Sorry, but this is the only photo I have so far:

Default is it me or does your car seem to ride a little on the high side??

I used to own a 97 A8 and don't remember there being such a gap...but I am probably wrong.

Default Check the tire manufacturer's web site ...

for the exact tire, but normally 8.0-9.5 is OK for 255/45-18. The design rim for this size is 8.5", but +/- a bit is certainly acceptable.

The overall diameter of the 255/45-18 is essentially identical to my 255/35-20. I've had zero problems with this size using either the Bridgestone S-03 and the Michelin PS2.

What tire are you looking at?

The car will sit 1/8" higher, but gap is also 1/8" narrower.

Default It should be ok but you can't run max air pressures.

Goodyear recommends 8.0 to 9.5 inch wheels for a P25545ZR18. If you run max air pressure, you might get excessive center wear.

Default Cheap and quiet, kumho ecsta asx...or pilot sport a/s. Can't decide.

This is my first real luxury car(A8L) and I want it as plush as possible.

Any other suggestions?

Default PS A/S is an awesome A/S

Really good in the wet. I scared the pee out of AudiAfficienado when I first got mine, braking in some rain.
