I have done alot of research on here regarding the limp home mode error I am getting:
17114 - Gear Ratio Monitoring: Incorrect Gear Ratio
P0730 - 35-00 - -
I changed the output sensor - nothing. The old sensor smelled very bad, but when I changed the fluid it didnt smell burnt.
I changed the fluid, the magnets in the trans were covered with metal particles, fuzzy looking but no metal chunks. The fluid was certainly not clear. When i did the fluid change there was no difference.
The car drives in reverse without any problems, when I clear the code it will shift into D without a abnormal clunk, but when I step on the gas it will then go into limp home mode.
I contacted Nat at Eriksson who informed me that these transmissions are know for broken clutch housings for the foward gears. If this was the case with the car in D and your foot on the brake, RPMs should not go over 2200, if they do it means the clutch basket is broken/cracked and the retaining clip cannot hold the clutches in correct. Mine will not go over 2000rpms.
There were somethings mentioned on the forum that I need help with:
1. How do I get to the wiring from the Output sensor so I can check it, I know its prone to failure from heat.
2. How likely is the Air flow meter a culprit here if the engine runs fine and smooth?
3. the Bentley mannual states: solenoid valve dirty/faulty, how do I check that?
thank you for all your help,
gtm

I think you doomed for complete rebuild. I spent at least a month trying to avoid a full rebuild but at the end I still had to do it. Things I done: changed oil & filter, pulled valve body and dissasembled it cleaned and put back together (after doing that I lost reverse as well), checked all the sensors (all of them were in working order). None of this helped.

I don't thing the G195 output speed sensor is bad. It would give you a code. If you want to test it, unplug the TCU. The plug has like 53 terminals. Terminal 14 and 42 should read 0.8K ohm.
It sounds more like a cracked clutch A basket.

The VAG-COM will display in real time what is going on with the solenoids, output sensor, and more. Invest in one. It will help you through this process and your next Audi should you need another.
Incorrect gear ratio has proven to always be slipping clutches and since your fluid is dark and the pan is fuzzy then I think that might be a good indication that the forward clutches are worn. Investigating all other possibilities is still worth your while and should be considered due diligence. The only way to clean the solenoids is to remove them and bench test them to specification. You'll need special equipment and a transmission service manual to do so properly
I didn't wrestle with the transmission problem when it happened to me on a 1998 A8. I took the hit and sold the car on Ebay and picked up a 2000 in lue.

Thanks for all the insight. I have a Ross Tech Vagcom.. thats how i know the code.
I downloaded the manual, but I cant figure out how to do the individual tests.
I am more than happy to sell the car at this point... but its quite a financial hit.
