I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON A 97A8 WITH A 99 OR 00 ENGINE THAT WAS INSTALLED BEFORE I GOT IT,I'VE REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP/FILTER AND ESS SENSOR AND PLUGS,STILL IT STARTS UP AND DIES INSTANTLY LIKE THE IMOBILIZER IS COMING ON BUT THE 97 DIDN'T HAVE IT,DOES THIS ENGINE SINCE IT IS NEWER DO I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING TO THE COILS,ECU,OR WHAT TO GET IT TO RUN MORE THAN 5 SECONDS.

OK. Location, engine code would be a big help to figure it out.

Big difference between 99 and 00 engine...4.2L? ...32V or 40V? Engine code? .. AEW, ABZ or AKB?
If it's a 40V (2000 or after), I believe it will require a 40V ECM to operate.
I'd Start by clearing codes and restarting 2 or 3 times and read new codes...but with wrong ECM, don't know if it can even produce usable codes.

Unless it has been properly bypassed there is an immobilizer. I have recently done A LOT of research on Audi immobilizer and SKC calculating. I would put 5 bucks saying that this is your problem.

THE ONLY ENGINE CODE LEFT ON THE ENGINE IS THE ONE ON THE INTAKE,077 133 185F,AND WHEN I LOOKED IT UP IT SAID IT WAS A 3.7 SO I DUNNO,DO YOU THINK I NEED TO CHANGE OUT THE ECU,THE CAR DIDN'T COME WITH A IMMOBILIZER BUT THAT'S WHAT IS HAPPENING?

Hi, even my 95 model has an immobilizer, and doesn't read the code every time. Sometimes it starts and then dies, but just before it dies the immobilizer light goes on, so i crank it up again and never had to do it for the third time. My bet is immobilizer problem, but also check ECM compatability with engine.

That should be a "AEW" 32V (97-99) engine off a FWD, if it's a U.S. model...the code is on the left side of the block, under the PS pump.
Don't know about the compatibilty of the ECM.
Is the car a quattro or FWD?
Do you still have the Equip/options list sticker in your spare tire well? ..it'll tell you what engine came with the car.

CLEARED CODES,NOT ONLY ONE PRESENS P1509,IDLE STABILIZER,DUNNO THINK THAT AND MAYBE THROTTLE BODY PROBLEM.

P1509 is for the idle air control valve. Can you rev the engine to keep it running...only dies while idling? ...or dies regardless?

THE CAR CAME WITH A 4.2 IT'S A 97 A8 QUATTRO,AND NO IT DOESN'T REV AT ALL, STARTS FINE BUT DIES INSTANTLY,SOMETHING IS CUTTING ENGINE OFF AFTER START UP,NEED HELP WITH THIS ONE PEOPLE GOT ME STUMPED.
