You need to check if the TPS and the idle control valve is plugged in. The ICV is on the top of the throttle body 4" long cylinder shape and has a wire connector on the end. The TPS plug is behind the TB right bt the firewall.

I have the same with my 1997 4.2 a8 quattro only when warm it will start then cut out after 3/4 times it will start also a very odd knocking from the air filter that it out of time with the engin this also happens when warm but if i switch of then restart this knocking type ticking will stop.the car has just done 95000 miles could this be due a cam belt change?

P.S. At 95K miles on a 97, you are definitely due for a timing belt change, if it's never been done before.
