Default That looks like Jewelry

yes I'd say that was 'out of the box'. I'm sure you are right but with 177K on the car and me being cheap I'm leaning toward the $2000 rebuild installed and guarenteed.

Default Re: If they haven't rebuilt one of these units before I might go for a ZF rebuild

If input shaft drum is cracked replace input shaft drum with updated part zf#1058.270.040.Posible cause for drum faluer is chanel plate of valve body.If main presure regulator is 9mm last spooL of the main pressure valve then you need to replace valve-new valve zf#1058.327.030 and section of valve body-1058.327.020 or022(chanel plate).I reasently purchas 98 a8-trans was bad.I rebuld it and the trans shift very weel.Only problem i got is when going to complet stop 2 out of 5 downshifts are harsh.Looks like the trans shift in to firs gear to early.Tcm is the last possible version. No faults in engine or trans c-units.power and ground to tcm are ok.trans code DTE.This is my first audi and i"m not shure if this is normal. When using tiptronic and downshift to first it shifts perfect.Audi dealer have no idea what is the problem.Thank you in advance.

Default Harsh downshift caused by the reduced clearance in the clutches.

It will not harm the tranny.

Default Re: Harsh downshift caused by the reduced clearance in the clutches.

Thank you for the fast and knowledgeable answer.I checked clutch pack clearances of A and F clutches-ok according to zf repair manual. The F clutch molded piston was thiker compaired to the original. The old piston is no longer available from zf.Are you aware of any valve body updates of the problem?I work for BMW and i did couple of 5hp24 rwd and they work perfect that's why I'm not happy with this one.I am afraid that the clunk will put too much strength to the A clutch and it will break again.
Once again thank you so much for the answer.

Default Re: If they haven't rebuilt one of these units before I might go for a ZF rebuild

I had and still have the exact same issue (firm downshift)from day one after my transmission rebuild 40K miles ago. I now know how to modulate/replicate this when driving and coming to a stop - most of the times.

Default I paid the dealer

$1100 today for the transmission work they did so far (replace speed sensor, swap TCU unit. even though the car is no better than when I towed it in. I had it towed to a local independent transmission shop that claims to have experience with ZF trans (They have a '97 A8 in there now). At least with an independent shop I get a guarentee on a rebuild-Audi wouldn't even guarentee a transmission rebuild swap. I'm guessing the repair should be around $2000. I love the car-I hope this fixes it.
