The A8 Center Console Demistified
Doesn't that look easy? And I think I added about half the wiring you see!

Got a hacksaw? You too can do this to your car!
I guess it takes a little guts....when I was doing this I was thinking "why the hell would I do this upgrade?".....it probably would be easier to buy a 2000 or newer.....

Looking a little better now.....
.....cut that darn thing back all the way and the new double din faceplate fits in.....kinda.
Even one of the factory holes (out of three) lines up...will just have to fabricate one small bracket so I can screw in two of the three fasteners (four counting the other side).
The old center piece was plastic, but the new one is metal so it makes up rigidity where I cut the old piece at the bottom....I hope!

Switches in and working! Until I drive home....have no turn signals!
I thought there was no way the switches would fit in that tiny space, actually without the seat heater switches and the defroster....the wiring and old LARGE connectors fit in there nice and tight.
Got the emergency flasher wired up and connected to the left and right light bus, worked! But when I drove home the turns signals wouldn't work...that's just because they don't have switched power to them right now because the new switch is different from the old one....will take care of that easily with either some simple testing or just jumping switched power to it.
See how nice and neat them are in there? Had to untape the rear foglight relay to get it to fit in....and a new way to cycle the front and rear fog lights off, just turn on the bright lights and they go off and need to have the switch toggled to get them back on.

You're probably right
I'll just have to wait until I get my next car and hook everything up to a PLC and a cool touch screen.
I just saw this Nav Plus system and thought I would have to have it! When I can figure out how to get a touch screen to interface with the center console, we'll do it!
My Nav Plus will!
And why am I doing this mod? After all this I don't know....actually I do....it keeps me out of trouble and worrying about everything in my life....it's not always easy being divorced and having two kids. With projects like this, it is!

don't forget that, while you have the unit out
it's the time to wire in your garage door opener into one of the switch blanks. use the rear blind one (right hand position), and it looks great.

Gee Paul, I hate to interrupt this conversation
you are having with yourself! LOL. Seriously, Im now inclined to go out and purchase that black/black 01 S8 regardless of its condition knowing that I can tax your brain with these kinds of results! You are amazing! I will take a 4`X 3` audipages decal for my roof!

reminds me of rewiring the phone in my car
to move it from the front of the car (the original owner had it wired under the drivers trim - duh!) to the rear trunk.
once the centre console came out, i couldn't believe the mass of wires, but everything had its place, and there were places to run wires without too much difficulty.
the only thing that i forgot was the bolt locking the centre armrest frame to the transmission tunnel cross-piece. for a while there it looked as though i would have to take the console out again...
ended up doing it 3 times anyway - for the radar mute, and the garage door opener...
