Default A8 differences???

Hi guys,

I'm in Australia and own a 1996 D2 A8 Quattro. It has the 32valve 4.2l V8, and 4speed tiptronic transmission. (and I love it)

I've been laying awake at night (literally) wondering exctly what the differences between the Euro, USA and Australian models.

I've noticed most part suppliers in the US dont list a 96 A8, but start in 1997...and then they state a 5speed automatic. Are the Euro models the same as mine, or US models...or are the Aussie ones different again???

Basically I'm wanting to order some parts, namely new front axles with CV joints (got the shudders), and I'm not sure whether the USA 5speed parts I've found will fit my Aussie delivered 4speed.

I'm also wanting to recode the transmission & various other areas of the car with my VAG-COM...but where do I find codes for the 4speed auto and for my exact model?...are the ones commonly list for a D2 for the US 5speed only?

PLEASE HELP. GOING CRAZY!

-Mike

Default I am in NZ and also drive a 4 speed 4.2 D2 1996-Lucky us we have the good trans

The cars are great and the trans codes for us dont officially exist but I have recoded to 00001 and notice a big improvement.
I logged data from the car and there was a definite improvement.
The main thing was the ease at which the dsp would engage a sport setting [far more readily than 00000]
and although it defaults back to drone mode there is earlier downshifts.
five speed was introduced in 1997[but without tip which came later] and was for the US market then flowed through.
What is the retail value of your car in Aus if you dont mind me asking?

Default Check your mail for part numbers-You will have access to limited number of

controllers-probably Engine/trans/HVAC/immo/ABS/Instument cluster and maybe one or two more.
Suggest that the shudder may be torsien and/or a cracked abs wire to the front wheel causing a shuddering effect when on lock and accelerating.
I had this symptom and since the ABS wire was repaired it has gone.[I had no codes at first then as it got worse I got an occasional code].

Wow, thanks. So with that VAG-COM I should be able to get 00001 to work. I've been wanting "sports mode" since i heard about it, but wasnt sure what to recode it. Will try this weekend. I noticed mine just seems to vary from a beautiful strong shift some days to the half-assed slur and thud the next...very frustrating. GIVE ME A MANUAL hhahaha.

The rough value of a 96 V8 Quttro is between $20-30,000 depending on milage. I had mine for sale for 27,000 with exhaust, rims, full body white, in perfect condition and 150,000k, and got 3 calls in 3 months...so I decided to keep it...which is probably best

Cheers...18inch fitted with 235mm tires and ride very well. They are fairly scratched from the previous owner, but they'll do until I get some new chromies...when I find some worthy lol.

Default The dealership told me that I couldnt recode but ....

I have run that code for about 1.5 years and no problems.
It may have been something that the factory built in for whatever purpose then opened up more in later cars.
I gues they wanted different settings for different terrains

Default Re: front axle part number??

Can anyone please confirm the genuine part number for the complete axle assembly for the front of a 4.2 quattro 4speed?

Are the left and right exactly the same, as a part supplier I've found said it only lists one code and said "right side".

I need to know whether the USA axle assembly is exactly the same as the Australia one. A genuine part nubmer will help...and will save me about $600 per side...I kid you not.

Thanks in advance!!!!!
