Default I can tell you that the 97 and 98 ECU pin outs are the same

I'm running a 98 ECU in my 97. I actually had it chipped.

Default What the problem really was... (or at least what fixed it)...

Problem was that the car would kick over, but wouldn't run more than a second or two. The indy shop that I was using (that is GREAT otherwise and has done more stuff free or "thrown in" than they've cost me in extra work) was using a generic OBD-II scanner and following AllData's diagnostic steps and it said "replace ECU."

Turned out to be a loose hose/fitting related to the fuel pump. EITHER that was the problem in the first place (meaning I didn't need to replace the pump after all) or the monkeys with wrenches at the first shop (90 miles away where my car died) disconnected it and that was why nobody could figure out why a new pump wouldn't work. Make sense?? (it just barely does to me, too) At least I didn't end up paying for the new pump itself.

Default Re: Do you really need a replacement or do you want it fixed?

Just wanted to give you and PaulW an update. After a longggggg six weeks, I finally picked up my car over the weekend. The culprit was the ECU
and I had some other work done as well (oil cooler/coolant leak repaired, brakes pads all around and upper and lower control arms replaced). The wiring harness for the ECU had too be replaced (and I understand that was a pain in the butt), but the car is back on the road and driving well. Nice driving without that nasty "engine check light" glaring in my face and the limp mode issue seems to have disappeared as well. Steering response seems to have improved too. As much as a complained about the repairs, it all seems to be worth it now. The repairs were costly, but then what isn't on these cars. Appreciate all the help from you and PaulW. Thanks again!
