Hi, Pete, and welcome to the SIG.
The integration of the cell phone in the '04 A8L is a topic that has frustrated the users of this SIG. If you do a search on "cell phone" you'll find thread after thread that show our frustration with Audi for signing off on such an abomination. I, for one, would advise you to return that phone to your dealer. If you don't have a cell phone which is portable, buy one. Any brand, or type will be more up to date and versatile than the v60 that Audi uses.
I use my OnStar phone for incoming calls and for outgoing calls while driving. It has served me well. You can get your incoming number when you sign up for OnStar.

I was afraid that might be the case. Dealership has agreed to pay for all my On Star usage until they figure it out. Dealer said Audi had agreed to pick up the tab.

I finally screwed around with it and found that I had to jam the phone into the cradle - it would "pop" when placing it in, then click a second time when jamming it down. Now it works everytime. I'm sure that yours has some other flaw, but who knows?
Someone else found that his didn't work until he had OnStar disable his phone.

I've noticed that with my V60 as well. If it only "clicks" once when inserting it in the cradle, you have no hands-free access to it and all calls placed are done so with OnStar (although you can't tell the difference when calling). Make sure the phone clicks twice when inserting it in the cradle.
As DrGallo recommended, do a search for earlier threads. I asked a couple weeks ago before making my purchase and received a lot of valuable information from owners here.
Without the V60 in the cradle, can you make calls via OnStar?

Are you sure you removed the rubber plug from back of the phone? SOunds like this might be why you had trouble getting it to sit properly in the cradle....many dealers are not doing this for customers when installing...
