My engine leaks in the same area, but there is nothing on the alternator, only the hot exhaust smell, and accumulation on the belly pan.
recently I pulled the air box to get a good look at the sender, though grungy there was no evidence of significant oil passing in that area. None at all down the engine block etc. Unless the leakage would drop freely to lower regions, I could not find a fault.
I thought I would be able to see if the oil to water exchanger was at fault, but my probing was unrewarded.
I need to be under and above at the same moment.
Ideas?

it got worse and started to gush! I mean I lost about a quart in two days!!! Lots o' smell too. It was slighty leaking for about 1 -2 months, then went to "super-soaker" mode
Check the wires in the area. Oil can run down them and seem to leak from different places.
Good luck!

Yup, caught a wiff at 80mph, pulled over to gas up, smoke was pouring out of hood and wheelwells. Managed about 10 miles to home, oil slick everywhere.
