Your car has had exactly the same problems as mine. Except the leaks. Everyone talks about the "thump" but I never hear about the trannys ever going out. Still I cringe everytime mine does it. And I am 40 miles shy of 100,000 miles. The big question I have is......is the "thump" harmless or is it a sign of bad things to come?

So I stumbled on to this posting and to my delight...2000 A8 discussion! I bought an A8 last week.
Never before had I thought about Audi as a car for me. My boss was selling his and it was beautiful and it SEEMED cheap and damn, I bought it.
That said, hopefully you guys can tell me a bit about the car and what I should look out for. Here is what I know about mine, tell me please if I got a good deal?
Black 2008 A8, Grey Leather, 71K and of course, all the toys. 100% stock. Factory 17" five spoke allows and brand new Continental Touring 225/50/17 all around. Previous owner just replaced the mass flow sensor, catalytic converters, rear brake rotors and timing belt. I just got 70K service today at McDonald Audi in Denver. Had them replace fog light bulb, interior map light (Driver Side) and the whole bill came to $182 including tax. Body is excellent with ONE door ding on rear quarter panel (I am ****...I can tell but others probably couldn't). Interior is flawless throughout and absolutely all electronics work perfectly. Have not been able to see any leaks, does not seem to shimmy or vibrate. I will need to replace the left tie-rod end next week because the bushing is worn. Tranny does not thump (I read a couple of posts where these things have iffy trannies?), power is excellent, full efficiency is better than I thought it would be. Breaks seem fine although a high speed sudden stop seems to make steering wheel shimmy ever so slightly. Vacum lock system for doors works fine but seems just a bit slower than electrical locking system.
In the end...I paid 22K exactly for the car last week. I love it so far. Did I get a deal?

and it sounds like you have most of the maintenance issues under control.
If you haven't already discovered audipages, take a look at this great reference; and you may also find the Ross-Tech VAG-COM software useful, for recoding the tranny to sport mode if nothng else. My only other suggestion would be to change the tranny fluid and filter every 30-40k miles; the tranny fluid is NOT lifetime.

With the maintenance kept up, are these motors capable of a long life like the +200k URS4/6 I see regularly out there for sale?
