a8 purchase
I saw a 1997 a8 for sale locally for under $5,000. The car has 180,000 miles. I used to own an 100csq and am looking to get back into audi ownership. The aluminum body sounds like a good idea as I live in the rust belt and I assume these cars must be immune to rust. Are these fairly reliable? I do most of my own work. Are the a8's diy-friendly? What kind of gas mileage do you get with them? Thanks to all.

That's a high mileage car but if it's been taken care of properly, no huge issues crop up on proper inspection (see link below), and you're capable of doing your own work, it may be worth a look.
Twice the money, if you have it, would buy you a newer A8 with less than half the mileage and fewer potential issues. We haven't seen the upper limit of engine life in the U.S. but I've heard of A8s in Europe still running at 250-300K (miles, not kilos).

Used A8 buyer's guide
