I bought recently A8 '97. Few days ago I heared
noise in transmission area. I went to two garages. One said $7K for overhauling the other
flush and change transmission oil.

Who to believe?

Any advice appreciated.

changing the transmission fluid AND filter will eliminate the noise and correct the problem. Note that changing the filter is as important as changing the fluid and both should be done every 40-50k miles.

And, like Randy said, avoid the garage that wanted to immediately replace the tranny like the plague. In fact, you might post who/where they are, so anyone living in that area can know to avoid them.
