A8 winter wheel ?

I have a friend with a 2000 A8 that lives in pothole infested Mpls. I have replaced 3 bent rims on his car so far and he wants me to look for something more foregiving than the 17 wheels he currently has on the car. For winter use only, are there 17" steel wheels available?
Are there 16" steel or alloy wheels available that will fit his car?

I use A6 16" wheels with Michelin X-ice tires.
