Default A8's huge depreciation !!!!!

Love my last two A8's but refuse to take such a hit on a third one. Traded my 98 Racing Green fully loaded, mint cond. with 47,000 miles on 2000 Ebony loaded for $30,000. Dealer showed me what they were bringing at auction - She was right. Yesterday I tried to make a deal on 2001 S8 list $77,500 and they told me my 2000 18 mos. old A8 with 41,000 miles was worth $29,000 to $31,000. I realize the S8 is more exclusive and limited but I feel it will probably take the same lose in two years. Will miss the A8 forum. Bye Audi......

Default Just lease it or keep it a long time.

The my2000 had many substantial improvements that drove down the price of the older cars.

Down east in Pennsylvania dealers are asking $50,000 - $53,000 for A8's with 15,000 miles. Havn't seen any with moderate miles like yours. What happens to these cars? $30k sure sounds low even for a trade. Fred

It seems that most high-end cars depreciate like crazy, especialy if they are not "trendy". Before deciding to buy a used A8, I was also looking at Jag XJ8s. Same situation - about the same cost new, and $27K for a '98!
It's a great bargain if you can buy a used one, but tough for a new one if you don't keep it a long time.

Hey, I thank god every day for the depreciation that made it possible for me to own my '97 A8 which I picked up for $25,000 with just under 50k miles one it.........ever consider selling it privately, instead of giving it to a dealer in trade and letting him take the extra $4,000+ in profit he'll get?? don't be lazy in selling it, and take the extra that is yours!!!!!

For what it's worth, I was offered $64K for my '01 S8 yesterday by Illinois BMW dealer. Had my name in on a Z8 for the past two years and it finally came up but the S8 is a wonderful car. Anyone want a Z8 at list?

Default S8 arrival has an impact

You should also factor in the arrival of the S8. Two years ago the A8 was top of the line and only product. Not true today. The S8 with markedly better performance and exclusivity and the A8L with more luxury and cabin space, are both considered model improvements. That makes the A8 3rd and it's taking a big bite of older A8 resale.
For these reasons, my dealer doesn't even stock A8s anymore, just S8 and A8L.

It's also worth noting that Audi has moved to a 4yr/50k mi total service warranty, a benefit the 99's don't have. That makes owning an 8 for four years a no-brainer. They cover everything but tires, so what change up until then. As the depreciation is generally most steep in the first few years, you'd find the market would catch up to you by four years out.
