Just wanted to give a shout out to PaulW for his adaptation tips, and encourage anyone who tried and failed to try it again.
I tried the adaptation about six months ago, but it didn't do much for me. Then, on a lark, I tried it again last week. After doing the push-the-pedal-to-the-floor-and-release-it-slowly thing, I then drove it VERY AGGRESSIVELY IN TIPTRONIC for about a week. A few redlines in 1st gear, never shifting up before 3500rpm, etc.
The difference now is remarkable. It'll stay in 1st until 10mph or so -- used to shift up at 3mph, BIG difference, and now 5th feels like 4th used to. It also seems better at staying in 3rd around town instead of jumping into 4th all the time.
Feels like a much different car. I can drive this puppy for another 10 years, easy.

With ignition on and car not running, slowly depress the gas pedal to the floor, take about 10-15 seconds to get there...hold for 5 seconds at the floor and release very slowly.
That's it!

After my transmission change, it was jerking a lot, but after a week or so it learned my driving style.
