Advice please re headlight bulbs
my car has Halogen bulbs and i want to replace with h1 xenon bulbs 100watt-is this just a straight swap or is it more involved

More involved.
There are a couple of ways to go. Most would do a retrofit kit, though it is possible to get all the Audi parts and upgrade.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/89004.phtml">Here's a thread on my install.</a></li></ul>

Try Dan Stern. at www.danielsternlighting.com
He has HIR, halogen infrared. They are the same wattage as the stock bulbs, but produce much more light. No chance of overheating your wiring. I just ordered some for my A6.
