This has been bugging me for a year - I experience this freaky phenomenon very often in my car, and being my first automatic I'm just not sure what 'it' is.
Here's the scenario:
I'm soley Chictronic. I tend to roll stops in 2nd (no editorial commentary, it's nearly a stop but precludes having to hit 1st and provides a smoother launch).
Sometimes I'll do this in 3rd. This is where I get 2.5th gear.
Roll stop in "3rd". Car pulls away fine in what I think is 3rd, but I get this weird "half-shift" from NOT 2nd, like 2.5. It's very bizarre and hard to explain.
So the dash indicator confirms I'm in 3rd, but I get a distinct 'upshift'. I get this consistently, and only under this scenario. All other functions of the trans are PERFECT.
I'm guessing it's an autobox issue that's wayway beyond me feeble capacity for comprehension. Like it's the torque converter locking up or something. I'm just not autobox versed.
The indicator starts in "3" and stays in "3" - but an upshift occurs.
Anyone here (Gabor/Paul?) care to edumucate me ingnoramus?
Danka in advance (DIA?)...

...a three syllable embellishment?
Kidding aside, really - walk me through it if you don't mind. I love learning things and me autobox Paulkipedia is kinda light...

which allows the lack of clutch and the shifting smoothness. It was also teribly ineficient which is why, historicaly, manuals have always gotten so much better fuel economy than automatics, since at best 70% of your energy was going into foward motivation. (think of it as driving around with your clutch half way in, a bit smoother, less driveline shock when changing speed, etc.) New TCs have a lock function similar to letting the clutch all the way out so there is no slip, and the engine and trans input shaft are moving at the same speed. Also means new automatics can use a much higher persentage of your energy to change into forward momentum instead of just heat. Therefore automattox are getting much closer to, (and in some cases passing) manuals for fuel eficency what with computers and such.
Hope it helps, albeit not the most technical of descriptions. Ain't computers grand?

...bogged launch is having the TC slip off the line then lock, and what I feel as the "upshift from 2.5nd gear to 3rd" is the going from slip to lock?
