so I took the a8 to Carlsen (Palo Alto CA) for a pre-trip checkup, including the "major" service. insisted they change the transmission oil and filter despite their protests that 1) it wasn't necessary 2) it would require dropping the exhaust system. jeez these guys don't know much.
the sweetness is that i ended up with an allroad as a *free* loaner! they were supposed to give me an enterprise rental (read: damaged Kia Rio), but those folks failed to show. and, i think, they saw me looking over an '01 S8 longingly, reminding them that at 69200 miles they could take my a8 as a trade and still sell it as a certified :-) it was a beauty -- exact same color as my A8...the salesman said i could swap and my wife wouldn't notice. yeah right.
well the allroad is kinda cool. i had the 2.7T, which is supposed to put out 250hp but sure seems to have a lot of turbo lag. it's not so bad if you just leave it in tip so it doesn't shift until redline, though it'll only hold 1st until 30 or so. just not the same as the 8.
well, wish me luck on my cross-country trip!

printing a List of all the problems they needed to address on a 8x10 piece of paper and taping it to the dash so they had to see it if they worked on the car. What was still amazing is that even after all that they still would screw it up.

Bad. You can't never compare a product of passionate person to a product of just making a living person, the 2 quality will be totally different. Dealer never think of better way to improve the work, just follow the procedure guidelines religiously. Whatever I can do for my car, I will because I know it will be done correctly to the Teeeeeeee.

My S8 visits Boston regularly -- at least 10 times a year, right accross from the "B" school at the Bright Hockey Rink. I've been known to wander over to Baker Library. See ya there.
