Default Alright fella's, need some guidance here...VGA 16885 P0501 035...

vehicle speed sensor range/performance

This has been thrown a few times since my speed-o died last week.

Indy shop has ordered me a new "sender on trans" to deal with the speed-o, but what about the Codes? Is this all related and going to be resolved with the "sender on trans"?

Default Speedo Died?

What do you mean speedo died? The VSS generates the signal and then it is processed in the instrument cluster. So you need to be more specific on your actual problem.

----------from the Bently-------------

Audi > A8/S8 > 1997 - 2003
3.7 & 4.2 Liter V8 4V Generic Scan Tool, Engine Code(s): ABZ, AEW
24 - Multiport Fuel Injection (MFI)Speed signal, checking Note:
The vehicle speed signal is generated by the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and processed in the instrument cluster.
Recommended special tools and equipment
V.A.G 1526 hand multimeter or V.A.G 1715 multimeter
V.A.G 1594 connector test kit
Wiring diagram
Test requirements
The respective fuses of Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- must be OK:
Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.
Speedometer -G21- must be OK.
Test sequence
Note:
To test speed signal, vehicle must be driven. Doing this requires a second person.
CAUTION!

Secure Scan Tool (ST) on the rear seat and have it operated from there by a second technician. Observe safety precautions => page
AUDI-D3-FU02-24-001-0124-1
.
Connect diagnostic tester => page AUDI-D3-FU02-ST-001-02ST-5.
Start engine and let run at idle.
Under address word 33, select "Diagnostic mode 1: Checking measured values."
Select the measuring value "PID 13: Vehicle speed".
Perform a road test, and have a 2nd person observe the indication on the display.
Check specified value of the vehicle speed:
PID
Diagnostic text
Specified value:

13:
Vehicle speed
approx. vehicle speed

End diagnosis and switch ignition off.
If no speed is indicated:
Connect V.A.G 1598/19 test box to wiring harness for Engine Control Module (ECM) => page AUDI-D3-FU02-ST-001-03ST-7.
Remove instrument cluster:
=> Repair Manual, Electrical Equipment, Repair Group 90, Instrument cluster, removing and installing
Check wire connection between test box socket C13 and instrument cluster for continuity or short circuit.
=> Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component Locations
Determine all additional "users" of speed signal (e.g. radio, automatic transmission, A/C system, etc.) according to wiring diagram, eliminate in sequence as source of interference and repeat test respectively until the cause is detected.

Default Sorry for the vagueness! My speedO sits at 0 regardless of speed. This occurred

25Km before the VGA error code was delivered.
My car seems to be running rougher then ever before. Down shifts are horrible and simple coasting around 45Km is hunting (from my interpretation after 3+ yrs here) endlessly.

It's been 15K Km (10K Miles) since tranny service. I plan on having it done when summer tires go back on, along with control arms and an S8 rear sway bar.

So, I truly have no idea if there is any relationship between my current issue and the slow death of my tranny.

My Indy and I have been discussing trying to have my extended warranty company step up and have my tranny rebuilt. He has been documenting tranny related issue on invoices for close to two years and our thought is that if we get it towed in with a failed tranny they may have no choice but to buck up. I guess this is a side note but if you (PaulW) have any word of advice related to positioning a warranty company to rebuild a 98 tranny I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Default I would say the poor performance is based on lack of speed signal for one thing

First thing would be to get that fixed. Then work from there. It's either a speed signal sensor, wiring or instrument cluster.
