Any adverse effects of wheel spacers on the wheel bearings?

It seems like they would move the rotational center to a point outside of the original location (ie. the center point of the wheel is the same as the center point between the two bearings). This seems like it would put added stress on the wheel bearings and make them carry a load they were not designed to carry. The wheel bearings may be constantly torqued to the side?

Though many many Audi's, and not just A8's, run spacers or wheels with unusual offsets, wheel bearing failures seem exceeding rare. Audi's wheel bearings seem thankfully over-designed.

Oh, by the way, the front plate bracket I have is a beaten up one from a brilliant silver car, needs paint.
