Does it make any difference? Read some where that we could use a Permatex electrical contact cleaner. Wanted to share your opinions/suggestions before I attempt it.

Yes, and no difference noted using VagCom. Didn't hurt and didn't help. It might be worth checking to see if there is a fuzzy somehow stuck inside the snout but I don't think they clean up. I tried a variety of solvents including one you can drink (at a frat party). Just replaced the MAS on wife's @#$%^ Mercedes and I didn't bother to try to clean it. These things fail left and right and are huge money makers for dealers because they can be changed so quickly. Once upon a time this part was covered by the Federal 7/70K emmissions warranty and the law needs to be changed back. I doubt the Bosch production cost is over $15.

there is something called a thermister in the MAF that detects thermal resistance. Could this be the item that goes bad after time? This was the issue with the 00+ A4's

In the GM world (which also uses Bosch MAFs) they have a MAF burn-off; a heating element which will turn on and burn off any crud on the MAF. I think this happens when you shut the car off, but I'm not sure on the timing. After a little google I found this article that says we may not have burn-off which is why our stuff can get contaminated.
