I've found as much as 10% more power over the entire RPM band with other motors. Makes me wonder how accurate the timing marks are on the audi v8.

In the D2 world few tune at that level. Since the timing belt doesn't allow fine adjustment we would need adjustable cam gears. The other problem is that the intake cam sprocket is attached to the exhaust cam shaft by a chain inside the head. So if you adjust the intake you automatically adjust the exhaust. This might not be ideal for tuning purposes. Other twin cam engines have two cam sprockets per head, one for intake and one for exhaust. In the interest of compactness, Audi uses a chain to link the two cams instead of two large cam sprockets per head. On a narrow angle (60 degree) V6, Straight 6 or 4 cylinder, there is plenty of room for the extra cam sprockets. Quad cam sprockets on a 90 degree V8 would make the motor very wide and not compact enough to fit and be serviced under todays sculpted body lines.

but nobody seems to mess with that anymore, they just add a turbo or turn up the boost if they already have one.
