Default Slow down .... Why do you attack?

Clearly a Dual processor Dell $7000 dollar workstation is in a diffrent class. Lets compare apples to apples so to speak. As for the testing I've done. It's mostly imperical. I use benchmarks based on time to do specific day to day tasks, like booting up, and opening and closing applications, rendering photographic data. The reality I've experienced is that some high performance workstations do wonderful with magazine style benchmarks data but the day to day performance was disappointing. Let me make myself more clear. I'm building Single processor, 2 or 4 drive RAID 0, 400 MHZ FSB machines at the price of single hard drive machines with 133 MHz RAM. I'm just trying to gage interest. If anyone wants details please contact me off the list. john@icsamerica.com or 718-448-7540

Default Thankfully for us PC folk -

Windows 2000 finally works well enough that you can plug things in and they just work. It's been a long time coming.
In any case, Windows NT/2000 bought me my A8L, so I gotta have SOME respect for it.
(BTW, I'm not an employee of MSFT).

Default I don't do anything too complicated on my system. Some movie editting, photoshop, web crawling. etc.

For the average user, the Mac is easier to use.

FYI. The N.A. BMW site is done on Macs.

Default I attack because I don't want people to believe "twice as fast as Dell's workstations" for $2000. We

both know that isn't correct and I want people to be fully informed.

Speaking as a guy that has built five computers for friends don't forget the support issues. My customers were all pretty sharp electrical engineers, a pretty good set of people to support. They can still be a minor pain to deal with. I don't sell computers anymore because I charge too much. I priced myself out of the market so I wouldn't have to deal with the support issues (phone calls and emails) without generous compensation.

As far as hardware support, only one of my machines has failed and the customer chose to handle the problem himself. I did pick electrical engineers for a reason. If someone needed to send a computer back or I had to go onsite to fix it that would be a PIA I don't want to deal with.

Make sure you tell your customers a two drive RAID 0 system means their chances of loosing data because of a hard drive failure are doubled. You may do well to make a CDROM burner and the needed software mandatory on your computers.

That said, Good Luck. I've got a hankering to replace my 3 year old overclocked PII400 with a new dual processor, RAID 0 computer with ATA 100 drives but the only thing it doesn't do fast enough for me is JPEG translations from VISIO (an example is shown below). I should be replacing my 5 year old, SCSI II, overclocked server first though. Did I mention overclocking isn't dangerous if you understand heat transfer, thorough testing and don't act like a crazy guy? ;-)

Have fun ! PEACE !
