The cost of repairing the aluminum frame is for sure a big part of the reason for the high insurance cost. Just look at how little of a wreck it takes before the insurance company considers the A8 a total loss.

I'm sure the stats are correct, but my experience was more encouraging. The insurance cost for the new A8L is scarcely higher than for the 2000 LS400 I traded in. I asked Allstate specifically about an "aluminum upcharge" and was told there is none and besides they feel they are mostly insuring the driver and to a lesser extent the car.
