High tech and progressive design - these are the qualities with which the Concept Design Munich studio of Audi design and the specialist watchmakers Sinn have infused a quite exceptional watch.
The Audi design Square chronograph is the first masterpiece to result from the partnership between the Audi subsidiary quattro GmbH and Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH, a company of specialist watchmakers from Frankfurt am Main.
Audi's typical formal idiom is unmistakable in the appearance of the Audi design square chronograph. The clear basic geometrical shape of the square is emotionally charged by taut dynamic surfaces and lent added vigour by the stimulating contrast between matt satin-finish and high-gloss polished surfaces. The manifest graphic principles of the basic shape also apply to the easy-to-read dial.
The sporty, square design of this watch, combined with its exclusive technology and quality, were in themselves ambitious objectives. The development of Audi's patented adjusting mechanism in the watch casing for precision adjustment of the strap transformed this watch project into a very special challenge.
Sinn, which is accustomed to exploring new frontiers of what is technically - and physically - feasible in the field of watchmaking, proved to be Audi's ideal partner for this venture. This company has been concentrating on the production of exclusive mechanical watches for the past 42 years. The company started out as a developer and manufacturer of ultra-functional, instrument-grade wristwatches and on-board clocks capable of satisfying the professional requirements of pilots.
Over the years, its technical innovations have repeatedly captured the imagination of the experts. Some of these unique detail features strikingly mirror Audi's ambitions as a manufacturer of exclusive premium vehicles.
The special oil developed and used by Sinn guarantees to keep the watch operational in extreme climatic conditions (-40 °C to +80 °C).
Sinn's patented "Tegiment" technology is a special method that produces a particularly hard and therefore more scratch-resistant finish for the stainless steel casing.
A special absorbing grease developed by Sinn is applied to the winding device rotor made by the mechanical Swiss chronograph calibre ETA Valjoux, to avoid vibrations when on the driver's wrist.
The Audi-patented adjusting mechanism in the watch casing adjusts the strap over a range of 3 mm, assuring outstanding wearer comfort in conjunction with the nickel-free casing base and the closure on the cowhide strap tanned using purely vegetable tanning agents.
The attention to detail in the design and technology of the Audi design Square chronograph is a fitting reflection of the high standards of sound German handicraft and engineering finesse. All components of the chronograph are made in Germany and Switzerland.
The Audi design Square chronograph is available from March 2004 at a price of €3,650 from Audi dealers or over the Internet at www.audi.de/shop.
