Default Re: Mine has been holding together with 132,000 miles on it.

My transmission was one of the first ones to start the thumping on this forum. It started the thumping around roughly 75,000. That was two years ago and over 55,000 miles ago. I also have the hunting problem that started around 105,000. Occasionally I have the hard shift or confused shift but this doesn't happen too often.

Overall there does seem to be a common design flaw in this transmission. I think the torque converter is the root cause of the problem. Very few of these transmissions seem to ever completely fail they just worry us to death.

I have done two transmission filter and oil changes. One I did the first one around 105,000 and another one at around 120,000. I now have 132,000 and I do not baby the car as I love to run it hard since it is so much fun to drive. I will keep everyone informed when and if my transmission fails but at 132,000 this doesn't seem too bad.

Default Thinking out loud again ...

From the history of posts, I agree that problems seem to center around the torque converter, but darn ... what can go wrong? It's nothing more than a turbine hydraulic pump, with only three moving parts!

The tranny also contains numerous solenoid valves, one or more of which are involved with the clutch that locks up the torque converter at cruising speeds. With our history of degraded ATF and chia magnets, I wonder if it's actually these and other solenoid valves that are screwing up and causing all the problems.

HowStuffWorks -- Torque Converter

Recoding to 00001 made the hunting stop on mine.

Should probably state that although it's better, it's not perfect, either.
