Default Awful squeek when braking - pads are not the issue?

Any thoughts on what else could cause this? I do have a bad tie-rod end that needs replacing, but didn't think that would cause the squeeking.

Default Rotors grooved?

I had to put a good amt of grease on the backing of the pads to get it slient..

Default Are you sure?

My S8 took about 4 long visits to the local dealer to get this issue resolved (at least with the current pads). There is an Audi Technical bulletin on how to fix this problem. It has something to do with the pads having a harmonic response to certain wheel speeds and braking pressures. The fix was a special polishing (actually scraping) of the rotors and the placing of a bevel on the leading edge of the new pads. You'd think w/ all the sophisticated engineering, they'd be able to prevent a harmonic resonance problem like this. An unofficial, but probably more successful fix, is to place a small copper washer beneath the pad. I assume this slightly changes the angle of contact between the pad and the rotor, thereby decreasing the chances of resonance.

(Sorry if this sound overly simplified, but I'm not a mechanic or engineer).

Default Re: Are you sure?

The bevel on the pad would be a temp. fix, as the pad obviously wears. The shim idea is better (but replace the Cu washer with a Ti "wedge", also doubles as a heat barrier which would help reduce heat transfer into the brake fluid). More permanent...And it sounds like they are removing any pad material that has been "glazed" onto the rotor face. Seems that they need to change pad compounds as the permanent fix.
