Default Battery swap = dead radio

I had to replace the battery in my 2001 S8 this weekend. Now the radio is in "safe" mode.
As i'm the third owner I do not have the code to the radio. The stealership wants me to make an appointment, leave the car for 'a few hours' and they will re-code it. COME-ON!! This is a "feature"? How can AUDI even think this is a safety feature?

Can this be done on line?
I know someone out there has had to resolve this.
Any and all help is always welcome.
Thanks
Jack

Default Re: if you're super lucky it will be in your owners manual.

It's not there. The handy, tear away card is gone. i even looked thru all the other pages hoping to find a hand written note or number somewhere. No such luck.

Default Still may not work...

Had my owners manual and the correct unlock code on my '97.
Just upgraded from Delta CC to a Concert from ebay.

Default do you have any service invoices

from the dealer, yours or previous owners?
The service records I got from the previous owner have the radio code printed in the top right corner with the rest of the vehicle information.

Good Luck

Default According to Bentley...

1. VAS 5051 (with current software)
2. Connected to dealer local area network, internet access.
3. GeKo user ID
4. 14 character radio serial #
5. 17 character VIN

Default You're out of luck.

Nowadays, you have to go to the $tealer so they can connnect to the network in Germany. I was quoted $75 for the 45min of time it will take. I tried giving them just the serial number off the radio and VIN, but no dice since they "changed" their system. :-(

Default check the option label (usually in the spare tire well in my beloved C4s)

some dealers write it there on new cars. also check under the hood...some service mechanics write it on the coolant reservoir or some other spot.

Default That reminds me, the card is intact in my owners manual and blank! D'oh!

Isn't the $tealer s'posed to put it in there when the car is purchased new?

Default I've often wondered about this, as I don't have my code either...

anyone ever tried one of these? I always wondered if the 9V would be enough.<ul><li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/CTA-Tools-Computer-Memory-Saver/dp/B000GKD5Q0">Car memory saver</a></li></ul>
