Jacked the car up and it sounds like it's coming from the middle hidden by the heat shields.
Is there a U-joint there? Is this the cause of the chimes.
How hard is this to replace?

The propeller shaft between the tranny and rear diffy has a center U-joint.

I occasionally get a melodic clang out of that thing when changing gears in my 200q20v sedan, which has about 280K miles on the clock. It's made that noise for several years. Never got louder or more frequent, so I've paid little attention.

It's starting to vibrate specially in fifth gear under load. Maybe it's time to replace.
Thank you very much for the input.

then shift into reverse, you will usually get a DING sound. I dont know if it is SUPPOSED to do that but mine does it too. I am getting my driveshaft replaced on wednesday so I will have an old one available for someone if they want it for a rebuild...FYI, RAXELS rebuilds em for $375. Ask for Marty there.

It's as if something is loose and it's hitting constantly as it rotates.
I'm taking it to the tech tomorrow. I went underneath the car and it looks like the exhaust system has to come out then all the heat shields before I can even diagnose the noise.
Noises and smells are not good in a car.

Most of the time it is one or both CV's at either end of the shaft (broken cage(s). The center usually tears the carrier bearing which throws the middle of the driveshaft outward about 1/4 to 1/2 inch where it then hits one of the shields. Around $300 to rebuild both ends and fix the carrier bearing.....

What do you think is a good offer for it? Make me one and we can discuss. Look for an email come end of the week.
