bird like chirping noise from back of car any thoughts?

when the car is running and mostly at rest there is a sound that comes from the rear of the car by the tires can not tell any more specific than that. It sounds like a bird chirping. changes in frequency and duration comes and goes. First time I heard it I actually looked under the car to see if I had a bird stuck down there since it has been going on for a few weeks I am assuming it is not a bird because it would be dead by now. so I don't think that it is canaries in the trunk, but then who knows.
