Default breather hose problems??

my car has been smoking slightly from the engine compartment for the last 2-3days

took it into the local shop today and when they removed the engine cover they noted and showed me that one of the hoses next to the engine block (towards the windshield/back of engine) had a BIG HOLE in it... the guy said it was a "breather hose".. he called a local audi place for parts on the hose.. and it was not in stock and will have to be ordered from the warehouse in new jersey (which is currently doing inventory and won't be available until sometime next week)

also noted to be torn is the long one in the front of the engine.

i think its the Emission breather hose and the Crank Case breather hose (this one is spray oil... is it dangerous??)

can i get a subsitute for them from a local autoparts store....

Default i guess these are basic HEATER HOSES!!

the 80414 from advance auto was to thick, even diameter wise.. i purchased 80404 which seems like a nice snug fit... only $8bucks compared to $61 from the dealer

are these hoses just as good??

I don't think the Audi hose 7.625 times better. Hose is hose.

Default Sucks unfiltered air

The hose should be under vacuum not pressure. Yeah, some oil spatters, but what's worse is that it sucks dirty air straight into the engine and accellerates wear.

The Audi hose is definitely crap. I doubt that a FLAPS hose is any worse. One of the two rear ones is incredibly hard to reach -- I think you have to take the intake manifold off.

Default finally replaced the damm hoses...........

i haven't check the vag yet.. but i'm assumming replacing those two breather lines finally did the trick of clearing my CEL!!!

should have checked months ago.. but i'm soo freckin' lazy it kills me.... i went to advance auto and purchased standard heater hose for $15bucks for the pair and about 1hour of screwing around and finally... done

the question now... how much damage did i cause to the engine with the vacuum being screwed up and sucking all that air into the engine???

I wouldn't worry about it.
