Brief belt shriek on 1st cold start of day
Happens every time, but only on 1st cold start of day. I'm assuming this is normal, self-adjusting belt, but the car is new to me and I want to be sure. True?

Re: Brief belt shriek on 1st cold start of day
Does it on my 98 as well, I simply turn the wheel right after starting the car and the shriek stops as soon as I do that. I don't believe it is anything to worry about.

You sure it's not the tranny?
We basically have never had belt problems, but every once in a while we get posts like yours on cold days....it's the tranny pump cavitating....
Has the tranny fluid/filter ever been changed?
You could always troubleshoot this by taking the belt off and starting it on a cold day in the morning.<ul><li><a href="http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission/autotran_troubleshooting.html">Have you read this?</a></li></ul>

Mine does it now and then...
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/81409/audi2.jpg"></center><p>I just had the tranny flushed, and since then have maybe heard it twice in two months. Sounds like a power steering pump low on fluid, goes out after .28 seconds.
