Broken armrest? I have the *cheap* solution

I searched high and low here for a decent answer to my broken armrest. It seems some people opt for the expensive "upgrade" to the single, fat armrest. But the color doesn't match. Others hope to find one from someone who upgraded or an online parts seller (maybe from a totalled A8). I was quoted $250 from one for just one side!
I decided to take a look in the yellow pages. I brought my armrest into a local company that advertised aluminum welding. I was quoted $70--$45 to have an upholsterer remove (and later re-install) the leather cover, and $25 to weld the pieces back together. This is a damn sight better than any other alternative, dollar-wise. I'll probably never use the armrest again, just to be safe, but $70 is worth the hit on resale I would have taken.
I've gotten a lot of great tips from scaveging these forums, so I'm glad I could give something back.

Any chance they can extend the armrest to move further towards the front of the car? My elbow barely reachs the armrest when I'm holding the wheel
