Difference between 1997, 1998, 1999. What are
major differences? What was first production
year of S8? What problems areas need attention
when looking at a used unit? Thanks.

2001 was the first year for the S8 in the U.S., I don't know about Europe.

I'll defer to others for the significant differences between A8 model years.

The 97 did not have tiptronic (but mine does!), and you couldn't get xenons and almost all of them came with the 16" wheels versus the 17" forged wheels.

Go for a 98 or 99 with xenons and 17" forged wheels unless you want the really low price of the 97 and you are going to upgrade it.

Don't buy a '97.
Why buy a '98 when you can get a '99 for the same price? The passenger side mirror is bigger on the '99. Otherwise a '98 is OK. (I H8 small mirrors.) '97's have tranny problems and not tiptronic which is a major resale fault to anyone who knows these cars - and most buyers do know. They learn first just like you are. :-)Just my 2 cents.

Did you finish typing the entire instructions on a tiptronic upgrade for our 97 A8s. how do you like the mod? is there a major difference? Where did you get your shifter for that cheap. I called a slavage audi parts and they quoted me $950 for a used one. would you be willing to put a group buy for these shifters if you know a place where you can get it for cheap.
