Default buying a used A8

Say if I want to buy a used A8 1999 with 110K miles on it, and I plan to drive 20K a year, should I buy extended warranty from 3rd party ? C.A.R.S will cover 4years, unlimited miles, but not sure if they are for real. Some said they are rude, and will rip off people.

Absolutely purchase a good extended warranty.

1st my recommendation is to look for a lower mileage A8 to begin with. There are quite a few out there and unless they are giving this 1999 away you may want to do some shopping to make sure you are getting the best deal.

Any particular reason you are looking at one with such high mileage? Surely there must be other options...

Let's say if it goes for $12000, would this be a good deal ? Year 1999.

How does a Lexus GS300 compare to the A8 ? I need to drive clients around town. I saw a 2000 GS300 that I can get for $20K . 60K miles. No warranty.

110K is really not even half a life on these A8 cars, why do you recommend a lower mileage ? Thanks.

I bought my 1999 with 99,000 miles for $13,400. Considered buying a warranty, but the cost was $3500. Unfortunately, I immediately had to dump about $2000 into it to fix an hellacious oil leak- turned out to be collapsed oil breather lines. The dealer picked up 1/2 the cost. For about $15,000, I've got one hell of a car. Plus there's $$$ left over to buy all the goodies that I'm discovering from the guys on this board.(thanks!) I put 235m mi. on my 1990 V8, and plan to put at least 200m on this one. I'll never own a Lexus

The 1997 w/o tiptronic seems to be a bargain these days. Is there any reason to avoid this year ? Thanks.

Is Tiptronic something you'd use quite often ?

What Range Rover do you have? I have a 96 4.0. I'm on the RR forums a lot b/c these vehicles have lots of idiosyncrocies like the A8.

I have a 96, 3.7 with triptronic, and I like the idea of triptonic , but hardley ever use it, but then apart from exstended rev range the 4,3,2 setting on the transmission do just as well and are eseyer to use.

Default I just bought a 98 A8 locally after bidding on Ebay for 97 & 98 for nothing!!!

After reading posts on here, I decided to get a 98, it doesn't cost much more if you get the right deal with the right owner. I never use the tiptronic, but it feels good knowing that it's there. If you're not in a hurry, take your time and a good deal will come a long. Important thing is the car must be in original condition, all the options, cold/warm/electronics, 17"s I didn't really care for but they're there. Maintenance records is a must. All used car will need some work, but make sure it's DIY able. I paid $3000 below trade-in value using Edmunds appraisal. Kelly blue book doesn't give credits for options.

Good luck,

Default Thank You, I will take my time then

Great advice. I am in the SF Bay Area myself. Could you let me know how much you paid for your '98 and what options it has ?

*** I am heading for Edmund.com now. Thanks.
