Default BW's custom cat-back kitty cat.

The post from that English guy with the quad-tipped exhaust (and all the RS4/Tubi sounds I've been listening to) got me all hot and bothered. I started thinking about how nice it would be to have something that looked good at the rear, purred most of the time, and screamed like a wildcat when you goosed it.

I visually digress, sorry.

Talked to my mechanic, he said, "Go see Josh." I went to see Josh. Lucky day, Josh happened to have a 97 A8 up on a rack for tranny work (a first!).

He suggested that the inexpensive route is to fab an x-pipe where the h-pipe is now, cut out the center resonator, and try that (leaving stock rear muffler in place). If it's too loud, put in-line resonators in. That can all be done for a quite reasonable price.

If it still needs more oomph, he'd take the rear muffler out and replace it with a Magnaflow unit he has in mind. He's basically saying, "Let's get it up, fab in the X, and I'll be able to tell where to go from there when I hear it."

My objective is to have a pretty modest idle that turns into a well-tuned snarl as the revs increase -- not boomy, snarly. He believes he can accomplish this without adding more tips (which would dramatically increase the cost).

He's willing to consider fabbing up more of these after we get mine dialed in if everyone is okay with him using my car as a jig -- meaning if you have to tinker after UPS drops off a box, that's on you.

Just thought I'd put it out there to see how many guys might be interested. Can't give a firm price until we get mine done and find out what the combo is. If we leave the stock rear muffler and use no new resonators, cheap cheap cheap. New resonators, old muffler, cheap cheap. New resonators, new muffler, cheap.

Something like in the link below: possible, but pricey.

Sound off if you think you'd be interested so I can tell him how many we might buy. I'd be doing this as a favor to the forum, not for dough. Use $1000, say, as a target figure to get great sound out of your A8. It'll be less, maybe way less.

Paul, you had an X-pipe on your '97, right? Was that the only mod, or did you mess with resonators and mufflers?

Also, if anyone knows if the facelift cars have differences in the exhaust system, please post a follow-up. Thanks.

$$$

Default X-pipes on an A8 might give you more drone at crusing speeds than you'd..

want to live with.

The rpm's of the auto-tranny tend to live at 2750-3100 for hwy speeds where a non-resonated exhaust would drone.

If it were a 5 or 6 speed it might not be so bad.

I think the replacement of the rear stock muffler for Magnaflow Race series ( not street )would yield a nicer snarl than resonator delete+stock muffler.

The straight-thru perforated design of the Magnaflow will be awesome. Its what I used on my S4.

Either way, thats great that you're at least trying to un-cork the beast.

Default Resonators out on RS4 = no drone at any speed or rpm.

Default Part of why I was thinking x-pipe...

...is explained by Randy in the post below. I reckoned that whatever louder sound was revealed by muffler/resonator changes would be a NICER louder sound as a result of the x-pipe evening out exhaust pulse flow.

ryoung's post

That "da...da da...da da ...da" link is a great explanation.
