ok, but i see this isn't exactly the right procedure. how do you normally recharge the system? I mean remove the moisture and any other stuff this guy talks about (that can cause long term damage). thx

Default Go to the dealer and write a check

Paul's excellent write-up was titled "The Poor Man's Recharge" for a reason

If it's just a little low, it works fine. I've done it on both my cars now.

Default H2O go

To do other than adding a little gas you need a gauge set and vacuum pump, the purpose of which is to pump down the system until water literally boils off and is sucked out. Water in the system is bad for several reasons. So is air (it had the water in it0 because it is noncondensible and also contains O2.

The system has a bag-o-dryer granules in it that will capture a limited amount of water. Also, if the system will hold a 29.5" or better vacuum, that is an indication it does not have a big leak. All systems leak a little gas over the years because they have a carbon/ceramic seal on the compressor nose, and various o-rings and rubber hoses. I just added a little R134a to a Volvo 960 and dropped the vent temp to 48 degrees (from 80). Took 20 minutes.

Adding a bit of gas is the first thing to try.
Based on your questions I'd let somone else do it. There are real dangers. Any rad/AC shop can add gas, you don't need the dealer. More gas is not better, past a point.
