Calling -ryoung-what did you have to remove to get access to grease your shaft?

I greased the external plastic housing. Any rubbing as it slides in and out should be readily visible, and in my case it was rubbing on both the top and right side.
I used a small amount of a heavy silicone grease. Greasing the top did absolutely nothing; greasing the right and the squeaks, squawks, and shudders disappeared and have been gone for about a year.

Mind you I take consolation from the fact that I am nowhere near the top global guys.
This forum has been hugely useful as a way to learn a huge amount about these cars from some very learned people with a sense of humour that just cant be found in a workshop manual.

... Mobil-1 grease on the rack and pinion did not help. D'oh.
But I'm not so huge that I really need this functionality anyway. Can't say I miss it other than when impressing visitors.
