Maybe a natural gas conversion?
In the UK a lot of guys have converted to natural gas....just got back from Argentina, about half the cars there are converted, much, much cheaper fuel.
There would be a big tank in the trunk, kinda like your gas grill tank.

Yep.. Definitely one of the gas conversions. It's termed LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) over here, costs about half as much as 95 RON petrol and a little over half less than 98 RON with a slight drop in MPG.
Takes a chuck of space in the boot(trunk) or replaces the spare wheel. If it's not installed properly can run like a dog, or explode your engine/manifold
