Can I lower my car without affecting ride quality?
I have a 2000 A8. Would like to get rid of the gap above the wheels. I don't race or track the car. So I don't want to lower the car and end up with a ridiculously stiff suspension. I sold an M3 and like the smoother ride of my A8.

What Jim says is the right answer, but there are different stratum of "quality"
I believe the folks who have H&R coil-overs say that it makes an A8 feel like an S8, but handles better.
Let me just warn you here about lowering the A8 .. at stock ride height, the front bumper is already VERY LOW and catches on curbs and parking lot bump-stops all the time, ripping off your entire nose when you back out.
If you lower your A8 you absolutely must be vigiliant .. MUST BE. If you loan it out to your child or wife to drive, they will tear off the nose.

I believe an H&R setup is a slightly stiffer than an S8, ...
which is slightly stiffer than an A8. Keep in mind that "slight" is subjective, but I've never heard any complaints about an S8's ride quality.
And your comments about the hazards of a lower nose are spot-on.

Stock S8 is still relatively soft. "Floats" a bit on fast, elevation angle-changing curves.
H&R or other setup, coupled with a thicker sway bar, would be something I'd like to try later in 2005.
