Wouldn't the black keep the coolant artificially warm?

Default That's not the sole answer, Dan. --

It's also perfectly smooth. Isn't the natural finish Sand-cast? They must have ground the surface smooth then coated it.

Default I've had many items powder coated and the only thing that is done to "smooth out" the casting is....

... sand blasting the surfaces ( the first stage of the process - cleaning). It does not have to be polished to get a smooth finish as pictured. The powder coating process leaves you with a thick finish eliminating 99.8%, if not all of the rough finish.

Both of my HKS pipes pictured were cast in the same manner as the A8 intake plenum. Also, my intake plenum on my 87turbo supra was worse than the A8, and that was also perfect once I got it back.

The shop that does all my powder coating work would only need to grind down any burs or lips near the separate pieces of the cast, not the whole surface of the unit.

I am a good business friend of the smaller of the two owners and spent a day there watching the process the first time I brought a part there.

They also do custom bike parts and have many sick choppers in house. These guys do high end parts, awesome quality. They were featured on OCC for an episode a year or so ago. OCC brought the frame and many other parts up here, watched the process and used some footage in that showing.
