Default Someone did this several months ago ...

they put a sub in the trunk, and took the bass load off the existing Bose speakers .. everything crisped up wonderfully, according to him.

Yes you do lose the info cluster, it is not a hard job but I wouldn't recommend it if you have no experience working with your car. There is a wiring harness and dash kit available from metra or American International. You will also need an antenna adaptor. You will also lose the CD changer in your trunk. If you want to keep your steering wheel controls you will need another adaptor.

Default What to look out for on radio change

Just swapped my failed stock Concert unit for an Alpine with Ipod connectivity. You need a wiring harness specific to the car to make the Audi wires connect to a Head Unit with standard ISO connector and mine had RCA speaker outs. The Ipod took over the CD changer, no big loss as the unit has a single slot for CDs. I didn't need a radio adapter.
It's easy to do, but Audi have a different ignition and permanent live to standard (you have to connect red to yellow and vice versa) otherwise you lose presets when you switch off.
Also the unit will cut speaker feeds to the Bose amp before it powers down and so you get an electronic thump on switch off, channel change etc..No big deal but might get annoying.
I had to change as my stock unit failed, as do they all after around 7 years (software problem) so I can live with the gremlin. You also need a facia adapter as Audi radios are wider than a standard DIN head unit.
Hope this helps.
