Default Check Engine Indicator

Greetings Everyone: I have just purchased a 98 A8 Quattro. 49,000 miles. I live in the Western suburbs of Chicago. My check engine light came on last week. Mechanic pulled code and it showed gas cap not closed all the way.
Gave it a few more twists and light went off.
Now I am in Kansas City and on the way down the check engine light came on again. Twisted cap and it will not go off. Any ideas? Thanks

Default You don't know without pulling codes

Without pulling codes, it could be anyting. If it still operates just fine, don't worry about it....drive it home.

It could be an evaporative controls system fault code or one of 100's of others.

Either get the ross-tech software to pull the codes (the best investment you'll make) or if I'm around when you get back, come by my place and I'll do it for you.

Thank you Paul. I think I need to meet you. I am in Aurora and plan on driving a lot of miles in this machine. I love it and I just want it to run right.

You have no idea how lucky you are being in Paul's neck of the woods.

Default Start it a few times

If it's your gas cap, then you may want to start it a few times (not in a row). That happened to me, after about 3 starts (with driving) it cleared itself.

The vag-com investment is worth it, the tranny coding alone will put a smile on you.

Default it may take a few days to clear out...

...it happened to me also...the light eventually went out after a few days.

This is a common thing. If it does not go out after a few days, I'd have it checked out...

Default Re: Check Engine Indicator, your sender cap clip seal is bad, a recall problem.

There was a recall on the A8's for the fuel sender cap clip....They are known to be weak..My light came on when the car was only a few months old.. I would almost bet that this is the trouble....Call your dealer.. They will tell you about the recall and fix it.. No big deal.
