Default check engine light (MIL)

Drove to the grocery store today (3miles round trip) came home parked the car in the driveway. About five hours later, started the car to put in the garage. The car was idling rough. Put it in the garage, and still rough so I gave the gas pedal a little tap hoping that it would clear the rough idle, but the check engine light came on and started flashing. The light flashed for about ten seconds and then went steady. Continued to idle rough, the car was even shaking. I shut the car off, and re-started still rough and the light came on. What is going on? Thanks a lot!

Default Just a guess, but it might be the MAFS, i would get the code read. You can ask someone with a VAG

or go to Advanced Autoparts and use their universal OBDII tool.

Default You have a misfiring cylinder... What I'd try first is putting Techron fuel injector cleaner...

in your gas tank. Follow directions on the bottle. You can get it anywhere from Walmart to Pep Boys. I've had the same problem. Can't find all the discussions we've have had about this on this forum. Good luck.

In my case this problem ocurred when starting the engine a long time after driving it.

does it matter that I put the highest octace gas in my car all the time. I thought the reason I put premium in my car is so I don't have to use additives.

Default I only put in premium gas in my car. Still the engine had this problem. The cleaner may unclog...

the fuel injector of the cylinder that is not firing.

Default Agreed, the fuel injector is probably clogged

You won't be able to tell if that's the problem without vag-com, but a lot of A8's have this problem with 100K miles or so....it's not hard to believe.

I would put some injector cleaner in the tank and drive it and see what happens.

Default

It may take 3 to more days for the problem to disappear after putting in the cleaner.
