Mine will upshift at redline and downshift on kickdown. Ouch to both if it happens at the limit in a corner. Us Yankees aren't completely nuts for preferring a manual.

I really don't know. I haven't done anything with it, but I bought the car used in '99. I hear newer cars behave different, but I haven't had the opportunity to test another '97 4.2 to find out. '97 was the first to get 5-speed tip too. 4.2's are very rare here, due to heavy taxation of displacement and power. Most A8's are 2.8 or 2.5 TDi.

Certification is expensive from what I hear!
The A8 is a relatively low volume car in the US, certifying another version will not be cost effective. That's why we don't get much choice here in North America.
