cigarette lighter in dash problems...radar

Anybody have problems with the cigarette lighter outlet next to the ashtray? When I say problem I mean my current cell phone car charger does not fit into the outlet. It actually fits, but the outlet is too big so it doesnt stay in securely. The whole point of this is that I am thinking about the valentine but worry about the adaptor not fitting. My socket in the dash does not actually work, when I plug my phone charger into it it does not light up etc.., but the one on the rear passenger "dash" does work. (still too big though) What is a cause of the front socket not to work? Could it be as simple as a fuse?
If there is a problem with my front outlet, is there another way to power the valentine without using the outlet? Paul, I'm sure you would have a rig for me.
I'm hoping this is a fuse issue coupled with a "too small" car charger. We all know this is a dream though, right? Please advise. Thanks!

I think the best bet is from the power to my moon roof. I had this set up in my '93 S4 when I had it and it worked well. If you take a stab at it let me know what you end up doing.
In addition, my V1 power cord does not come loose from the cigarette lighter outlet next to my asht ray, but the cord across the audio head/CD slot is a pain.

take a voltmeter to the socket and make sure you are getting voltage. if no voltage, check the fuse. Hardwiring a valentine would be fairly easy. You could run a wire from the top of the headliner or from the bottom of the dash where the dash meets the windsheild.

Have you guys wired a radar from where the dash meets the window? If anyone has any pics that would be great...Have any of you found an issue with the socket being too big? I suppose I couold live with the wire hanging in front of the dash until it is wired into the car....

I did that on my old audi, it's quick and easy.
Just take the panel off and they'll be wires in there, just need to figure out which one is hot and which is ground. Easy enough.

Go to "microphone installation" at V60 install procedure on how to remove the panel.

When I received my V1, it came with a couple of adapter sleeves that you could slip over the cigarette plug to increase the diameter for larger cigarette lighter sockets.
I have the same problem on my 97 - the front socket is looser than the rear.

I've installed the remote face with my V1 and it sits in the bottom center of the instrument cluster. Blocks a few idiot lights like the high beam blue, but not really a problem. Wired it into the fuse box under the steering wheel. Took about an hour to install. I'll have to take a few pics to show you.
Valentine has a gray sleeve which will fit on the tip of your power cord and fix the sloppy problem. If you don't want to bother, wrap about 5 layers of electrical tape around it and then cut it away from the steel contact strips...it'll be fine.

I wired the RD to the RV mirror on my Rover. Worked fine, plus I would think that the juice going to the mirror matches closer to the needs of the detector. I mean would'nt you fry the RD if you hooked it right up to the sunroof? Hey I am no electrical guru at all but I would think you would need to match up the voltage as close or exactly the same.. Comments?

.
for both, 12 volts. The mirror, sunroof, and radar detector all draw only the amount power (watts) that they need. Watts equals voltage times amps, so it's only amps that varies.
You are right, though, to the extent that you can't add a new device that draws high amps to a circuit that normally sees only low amps. The existing fuse and possibly existing wires would be too small.
