Once more, a car Clarkson has not driven enough
on real roads in real conditions.
You will not get 800 miles between tanks of fuel if you use the power of the V8 TDI engine. If you are Audi's official range tester and drive with bare feet so you can feel every nanometer of pedal travel, then yes you conceivably might do if you drive mainly downhill with a following wind.
The steering is lifeless, yet transmits the road surface transitions enough to twitch when going over white lines? No, it has wide section tyres, which do tramline into grooves and over white lines, regardless of who's car they are fitted to. You can drive it by feel, but you need experience to do so because Quattro is so different from the drivetrains other manufacturers fit to their cars.
I wish his bottom had written the piece. It might have made better use of the column inches.
IMHO of course (take note Clarkson, I can distinguish between my opinion and scientific fact).
