Code 17114 not necessarily a tranny rebuild...

In preparation for changing the rear breather hoses and cam cover seals, I noticed some buildup of oil "sludge" on the back of a 4.2 on my wife's '99 A8Q. Cleaned the back of the cold engine with a degreaser and water. After startup the tranny immediately went into "limp" mode upon selecting any forward gear (reverse was OK) and threw code 17114 (Incorrect Ratio).
I took apart and cleaned the three connectors towards the bottom/left side of the tranny (with QD), and lo and behold, poured about 1 tablespoon of water from the large (main) transmission connector. After all cleaned and dried, put it all back together and voila - all is good again. Dodged a bullet this time... Thought this might help someone else.
