Default is it common for the the check eng light to come on for a lose gas cap?

so my check eng light comes on today, car is running normal. I take it home at lunch and plug the OBDII in and suggest that the gas cap was probably the culp. I didn't realized the gas cap clicked, and was told by the previous owner "oh yea, you need to make sure the gas cap clicks at least twice." Is this common?

Thanks in advance.

on all/most new cars now yes this is common. the gas cap is part of the emissions control. needs to be closed tight or it will trip the sensor. If the cap still does it after you tighten the cap you need a new cap...

Default My brother-in-law, who's a mechanic, says make it click 3x!

For good luck I suppose.

Default thanks for the response

yea I doubt I need a new petrol cap, probably just the fact that I didn't tighten it properly.

Default Yep, pretty funny even if you're not a Kerry supporter.

Whenever the news gets me down, I can always go to www.whitehouse.org for a laugh.
